In our fast paced life, sometimes we never get the opportunity to think about humbled beginnings. Today marks a new beginning for BrilliantWORX, as we are about to launch our new marketing campaign. We are currently operating in 5 major cities in Australia which astounds me, as I spend countless hours behind a computer, planning, researching and designing, I chuckled about humbled beginnings.
Just 4 years ago I was completing a psychology uni degree, with the hope that all my commitment and dedication would see me land a great job with great salary package and all my troubles of living on the poverty line as a student would be over. Little did I know that my troubles hadn’t even started. I am sure I am not alone in this world of losing all your confidence to get back into the workforce, in the pursuit of the one piece of paper that could be a game changer.
After many months applying for positions with not one reply I resigned myself to the fact that things were not looking favourable. I spent 4 months hitting the pavements delivering local newspapers for $5/hr just to pay rent and groceries. I made a decision that is this was going to be my lot in life i would do it with excellence. My passion and dream was to serve my community, so I took it seriously and gave it my all.
One day I was complaining about how far I had walked, how many tonnes of paper I carried over a 3 day period and my financial struggles, when a girfriend offered to give me her cleaning business. She chatted to her clients and let them know she would be training me to take over. I went from my poor menial existence to working 5 days a week in the most lavish houses in our community for professionals who were leading in their spheres. Soon I was able to promote business and I started sharing my jobs with others who were desperate to get ahead.
After 4 years I have inspired many to do the same and BrilliantWORX has evolved into a social justice project that empowers many to break free from living on welfare. We have seasonal contracts where we work with people on mental health disability pensions, people with injuries, single parents, long term unemployed, victims of domestic violence and people rehabilitated from substance abuse and prison. Even the stay home mum who has been raising a family for 5 years and just doesn’t have the self esteem or confidence to apply for work.
Its rewarding to see them in their humble beginnings, rise up to embrace hard work, overcoming barriers and transforming their lives to overcome their circumstance. It’s amazing what humble beginnings and an opportunity can achieve in the pursuit of living a life worth living.
